International Diabetes Federation Diabetes Atlas – 10th Edition
The IDF Diabetes Atlas serves as a reliable source of evidence on the prevalence of diabetes, its global picture, and its burden on global, regional, and national levels. IDF Diabetes Atlas Committee presents 10th edition under the title “IDF Diabetes Atlas-10th Edition”. The highlights of this edition are given below:
Objective:
To improve and serve more effective use of the IDF Diabetes Atlas.
To continue innovation development for the 10th edition by utilizing new methods and incorporating new data sources.
Method:
Selection and analysis was conducted by high-quality data sources. Review has been carried out by the IDF Diabetes Atlas Committee consisting of experts from all seven IDF Regions.
Additional information from national health surveys, namely STEPwise approach to Surveillance (STEPS), World Health Organization (WHO) are used.
Highlights:
• This edition confirms diabetes as one of the fastest-growing global health emergencies of the 21st century
• 10th edition also concludes that hyperglycemia in pregnancy (HIP) affects approximately 1 out of 6 pregnancies.
• Higher proportion of people are under the category of undiagnosed diabetes, mainly type 2.
• There is an urgent need to diagnose people and provide appropriate treatment as early as possible.
Limitation:
• The definition of diabetes described here was based on an epidemiological definition. This definition requires only one abnormal blood glucose level for diagnosis.
• In case of lack of any internal data from a specific country, data from an alternate country with a similar language, economy, and demography is used. This can serve as a source of error.
• The urban and rural classifications are based on the definition of individual data sources rather than defined by the IDF analysis team.
