Dr. Rajiv Kovil: Guest Editor for Nov 2020
Hello colleagues,
I am delighted to be the guest editor for Metabolic Health Digest’s (MHD) October 2020 issue. The prevalence of metabolic issues are found more than what one can expect by chance in people with obesity and urban lifestyle; these phenomena are driving the global epidemic of Type 2 Diabetes and Cardiovascular diseases. Furthermore, metabolic abnormalities can lead to more complex manifestations like insulin resistance, PCOS and Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD). To put it straight, non-communicable diseases are fast emerging as the largest cause of mortality globally, and especially so in India, where we have the unique challenge of the “under fed” and the “over fed” simultaneously.
MHD is an endeavour that will bring the latest in science and research in this domain to the forefront for the medical community in India. This forum facilitates discussions and debates; this forum provides an opportunity to deliberate, and to come to a consensus on treatment guidelines, which all of us can extrapolate into our clinical practise and hence improve the outcomes of the patients at large. What’s more interesting? This forum will bring real-world scenarios from clinics spread across India; senior metabolic physicians will share their experiences on effective strategies for identifying and treating metabolism related co-morbidities that are crucial to the prevention of future cardiovascular disease and poor health outcomes.
As we all are aware that 5 components of the metabolic syndrome (i.e. obesity, lifestyle, dyslipidaemia, hypertension and diabetes) have a common soil hypothesis, my job as guest editor is to reiterate that patients with metabolic abnormalities cannot be treated in a piece meal manner. A holistic treatment approach that makes use of the best evidences we have today and the tools to supplement our chronic care practices are critical.
On this remark, I conclude my note here and wish you a happy reading!
