Diabesity: the Combined Burden of Obesity & Diabetes on Heart Disease and the Role of Imaging
Combined adverse health effects of obesity and diabetes mellitus are described under the term. Previous studies have found shown a direct proportion between adiposity and the risk of cardiovascular disease, some cancers, and diabetes mellitus. Hence, Arnold C. T. Ng and colleagues published a study in the Nature Reviews Cardiology journal under the title “Diabesity: the combined burden of obesity and diabetes on heart disease and the role of imaging”. The summary of this study is given below:
Objective:
To investigate the effect of obesity and diabetes on the myocardium.
Methods:
The guideline was developed from the currently available evidence and scientific and medical knowledge.
Findings:
Investigators suggest that early detection of the effect of diabesity on cardiovascular health can enable to prevent complications such as cardiac remodeling, atherosclerosis development, IHD, and heart failure by providing effective therapies. Unlike conventional imaging techniques namely CT, cardiac magnetic resonance, and echocardiography, novel post-processing tools, and techniques help in identifying the biological processes that underlie metabolic heart disease.
Investigators highlight the need for future studies in order to explore the prognostic value of these imaging techniques for clinical outcomes in a large group of patients with diabesity.
